Jade is actually two minerals: nephrite — the tough, waxy stone of ancient China, carved for 7,000 years into ritual discs, seals and amulets — and jadeite, rarer and more vivid, which reached China from Burma in the 1700s and became the imperial obsession. Confucius listed jade's eleven virtues; emperors were buried in jade suits; the finest translucent emerald-green jadeite is still called Imperial jade. How to identify and value it
Jadeite value turns on colour, translucency and texture: vivid even green (or fine lavender), high translucency, no treatment. 'A-jade' is natural; B and C grades are bleached or dyed and worth far less — treatment testing matters, and certificates (e.g. from a recognised lab) help greatly at the top end. Nephrite is more modest but fine antique carvings carry real value. If you hold old jade, especially Art Deco-set or Chinese carved, have it assessed before selling — the gap between grades is enormous.
