Silver calculator UK
Estimate indicative silver value by weight and purity—925 sterling, Britannia, fine silver and common coin or continental grades. Figures scale from our published 925 scrap £/g band; they are not a binding quote until we have tested your actual items.
Calculate an indicative value
Estimates assume the weight you enter is all silver at the purity selected. Mixed or plated items need a different workflow—see the sections below.
Enter weight in the unit selected below.
Some pieces—marked flatware, coins, or recognisable makers—can be worth more than melt. Send photos if you are unsure.
Live benchmark for fine silver (spot, not scrap): live silver price UK. This calculator is for scrap-style payouts on weighed, tested precious metal—not the same as spot per troy ounce on a chart.
How this silver calculator works
We start from the same illustrative £/g for 925 sterling published on our scrap silver value page. For other purities, the tool scales that rate in proportion to fineness (for example, 958 Britannia or 999 fine uses a higher effective £/g than 925, because there is more silver in each gram of metal). That is a simplified model for quick guidance only.
If you use troy ounces, we convert to grams using 31.1035 g per troy ounce before applying the rate.
What this estimate covers
- 925 sterling — UK hallmark standard for most jewellery and tableware.
- 958 Britannia — higher fineness UK silver; see also Britannia vs sterling.
- 999 fine — bullion-grade silver; still subject to testing and our published bands.
- 900 coin silver — common for some historic coinage; not the same as UK sterling.
- 800 continental — frequent on European hollowware; lower silver content than 925.
When the estimate may differ
- Silver plate (EPNS) has negligible recoverable silver for scrap purposes—use plated vs real silver to tell the difference.
- Weighted pieces (knife handles with cement, hollow stems) often contain less silver than total weight suggests.
- Wrong fineness selected in the dropdown will skew the number; when in doubt, check purity marks explained.
- Final quotes follow XRF or other testing and our payable-weight rules—they can legitimately be above or below this quick sum.
Why some silver is worth more than scrap
Maker marks, date letters, complete services, numismatic coins, and strong decorative appeal can support a price above melt. This calculator does not price that premium—it only approximates a scrap-style floor from weight and purity. If you think your lot might be collectible, use WhatsApp or sell your silver so we can advise.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this silver calculator?
It is indicative only. It uses a proportional model from our published 925 £/g and does not replace weighing, testing, or our payable-weight rules on real items.
Does this work for silver plate?
No. Electroplated or EPNS items are not modelled here. See silver plated vs real silver and send photos if you are unsure.
Does it work for Britannia silver?
Yes—choose 958 Britannia in the purity dropdown. Final payment still depends on assay and actual fineness.
Why might the final quote differ?
Testing may show a different purity, non-silver components, repairs, or weights that are not fully payable. Conversely, specialist or antique value can exceed the scrap-style estimate.
Can antique or maker-marked silver be worth more than scrap?
Often yes, for the right pieces. This tool does not price numismatic or decorative premium—contact us with photos or use the quote form.
