Got Broken Gold? Find Out What It's Worth

Almost everyone has a little hoard of it somewhere — a tangle of broken chains in a drawer, a single earring whose partner is long gone, a ring that no longer fits or a clasp that snapped years ago. It's easy to assume broken jewellery is worthless. It isn't. If it's gold, its value is in the metal, and that value doesn't disappear just because the piece is damaged.

At Mozeris Fine Antiques we buy broken and scrap gold every week, and we're glad to take the odd, the damaged and the unloved. Here's how it works — and why your "junk" drawer may be worth more than you think.

Why broken gold still has real value

Gold doesn't tarnish, corrode or lose its purity, however battered the piece. A snapped 9ct chain contains exactly the same gold it did the day it broke. So scrap gold is valued the same way as any gold: by its carat (purity) and its weight, against the live gold price. Condition, completeness and whether it still "works" simply don't matter for scrap.

"Broken gold isn't worthless — it's just gold waiting to be weighed. The clasp may have failed, but the value never did."

A drawer of broken chains is still a weight of gold — valued by carat and grams, not by condition.

What we take as scrap gold

Broken chains & bracelets

Snapped links, failed clasps, kinked or knotted chains — all bought by weight and carat.

Single & odd earrings

Lost the pair? A single gold earring or stud is still gold and still worth selling.

Bent or damaged rings

Misshapen, cut-off or worn-through rings, including those that can't be resized.

Odds & ends

Cufflink singles, broken brooches, old wedding bands, dental gold, bits of gold mount — all welcome.

How We Value Scrap Gold

The process is simple, transparent and explained at every step:

  • Carat by carat — We sort by purity (9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct); higher carat is worth more per gram.
  • Precisely weighed — Each carat group weighed on calibrated scales.
  • Against the live price — Valued at the current gold market on the day you sell.
  • Stones removed fairly — Any gemstones are accounted for, not lumped in as gold.
  • No charge to assess — Free valuation, and you're never obliged to sell.

Don't sort or clean anything first — bring it as it is and we'll do the rest.

One important check before you scrap it

Just occasionally, a "broken" piece is worth far more whole than melted — an antique chain, a designer fragment, or a hallmark that points to a collectable maker. That's exactly why we assess every piece as both scrap and antique before recommending a route. We will never melt something that's worth more intact, and we'll always tell you if you have a piece that deserves a second look. A snapped gold albert chain, for instance, can still hold collector value.

Odd pieces of gold jewellery — a single earring, snapped chain and bent ring
We check every piece as both scrap and antique — so nothing worth more whole is ever melted by mistake.

To understand the metal value, see our gold scrap price page and today's live gold price. For a sense of what a sale nets per gram, our blog on how much 1g of 9ct gold is worth is a useful guide. When you're ready, sell via sell your gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Selling broken and scrap gold — common questions.

Is broken gold jewellery worth anything?

Yes. Gold keeps its value regardless of damage. A broken chain, single earring or bent ring is valued by its carat and weight against the live gold price, exactly like any gold. Condition doesn't reduce the metal value.

Do I need to clean or repair it first?

No — please don't. There's no need to clean, polish, untangle or repair anything. We assess it as it is, and attempting a repair can actually cost more than it adds.

Will I get less for scrap than for whole jewellery?

For scrap, you're paid the metal value by weight and carat. Some pieces are worth more whole — antique or designer items — so we check every piece as both scrap and collectable and recommend the route that pays you most.

Can I sell gold with stones still in it?

Yes. We account for any gemstones separately rather than treating them as gold, so you're fairly valued for both the metal and any stones worth keeping.

What carats of scrap gold do you buy?

All of them — 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and 22ct, plus higher-purity Asian gold and dental gold. Higher carat means more pure gold per gram and a higher price.
