Quick answer

The engagement ring trends for autumn 2026:

  • Old mine and old European cut diamonds lead, with vintage rings drawing millions of views on TikTok.
  • Gothic (+42,550%) and whimsical (+21,100%) were the fastest-rising UK ring searches in the month to 2 October.
  • Opals are rising too, but are soft: 5 to 6.5 on the hardness scale.
  • Toi et moi, east-west settings and yellow gold complete the list. Most have an antique original.

What is trending, and how we know

Every trend on this page is backed by search, social or press data from the last few weeks. Here are the numbers, so you can judge them yourself:

Google reports rising searches as growth over the period. Figures in the tens of thousands of per cent mean a search that was close to zero a month earlier: they show direction, not size.

Each trend below comes with the evidence for it, how to wear it and the antique ring that did it first.

01of 7

Old mine and old European cut diamonds

The first trend is also the oldest. Old mine cuts were cut by hand from the 18th century to the late 19th, with a cushion outline, a high crown and a small table; the old European cut is their round successor, common until the 1930s. Both show broad, soft flashes of light rather than the fine sparkle of a modern brilliant. Taylor Swift's ring, revealed in August 2025, is an elongated old mine cut in yellow gold by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.

Wear it well. Diamond is 10 on the hardness scale, so the stone is not the worry; on a ring a century old the claws are often what has worn, so have them checked once a year. Every old cut diamond is antique by definition: see old mine cut diamonds, the old European cut and our vintage engagement rings.

Gothic: dark stones and deep reds

Illustration of a gothic engagement ring: a deep red oval garnet in a halo of black diamonds, set in blackened gold, on charcoal velvet
Illustration: a garnet in a halo of black diamonds, set in blackened gold

The fastest-rising ring search in our data, up 42,550% in the UK in a month. Pinterest named "Vamp Romantic", dark and dramatic romance, among its Pinterest Predicts trends for 2026, and The Knot runs a feature on gothic engagement rings. Think black diamonds, garnets, deep rubies and purple stones in blackened silver or dark gold, often in a dramatic outline such as a navette, a skull or a serpent.

Wear it well. Garnet is 6.5 to 7.5 on the hardness scale, per GIA, so it scratches more easily than ruby or sapphire (9). Black diamonds owe their colour to dense inclusions or to treated fractures, so choose a setting that protects the edges. The Victorians did gothic first, with deep red garnets and rubies in gold: see Victorian jewellery and ruby engagement rings.

Whimsical: snakes, flowers and clusters

UK searches for "whimsical engagement rings" rose 21,100% in the month: snakes, flowers, leaves and clusters that look grown rather than made. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a serpent ring set with an emerald, her birthstone, when they became engaged in 1839, and snake rings stayed popular for the rest of the century.

Wear it well. Raised, sculpted designs catch on knitwear. Check the small claws, and take the ring off for the garden and the gym. See cluster rings and unique engagement rings.

Opals and coloured stones

Searches for "opal engagement ring" rose 140% in the month, and opal is October's birthstone. Sapphire, emerald and ruby centres are part of the same move away from the white diamond solitaire.

Wear it well. Opal is the delicate one: 5 to 6.5 on the hardness scale with poor to fair toughness, GIA notes, and heat or a sudden change of temperature can crack it. Clean it only in warm soapy water, and choose a protective claw or rubover setting. Sapphire and ruby (9) are the hard-wearing choices. Victorian and Edwardian jewellers set coloured stones widely: see coloured gemstone engagement rings, sapphire, emerald and ruby engagement rings.

Toi et moi: two stones, one ring

Illustration of a toi et moi ring with a pear-shaped blue sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond on a yellow gold crossover band
Illustration of a pear sapphire and pear diamond toi et moi, not Napoleon's ring itself

French for "you and me": two stones of equal importance side by side, on a crossover or straight band. The most famous is the ring Napoleon gave Josephine before their marriage in 1796, a pear-shaped sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond. It sold at Osenat in Fontainebleau in March 2013 for a hammer price of about $949,000, reported PRI, against an estimate of €10,000 to €15,000.

Wear it well. Two stones means two sets of claws to check, and crossover bands do not always sit flush with a straight wedding band, so try the pair together before you buy. Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco jewellers all made them: see our toi et moi engagement rings.

East-west settings

Illustration of an oval diamond set east-west, lying across a slender yellow gold band

An elongated stone turned sideways, so it lies across the finger rather than along it. Harper's Bazaar picked it out as a bridal trend; oval, emerald, marquise and pear cuts suit it best.

Wear it well. A sideways stone sits wider, so it can rub the fingers either side: check it does not catch when you close your hand. The antique answer is the ring that runs across the finger, from half hoops to Art Deco plaque rings. See marquise diamond rings and Art Deco engagement rings.

Yellow gold

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, reported by National Jeweler, found 39% of engagement rings bought by US couples were yellow gold, more than double the share five years earlier. In Britain, 18ct gold is 75% pure gold and 9ct is 37.5%, and both are hallmarked.

Wear it well. 18ct has the richer colour but is softer; 9ct is harder-wearing and less costly. Most Georgian and Victorian rings are yellow gold, and old cut diamonds and yellow gold were made to go together. See yellow gold engagement rings and Georgian jewellery.
