Yellow Gold Is Back: Why Chunky and Antique Gold Jewellery Leads 2026

After years of white gold and platinum, the warm metal is back on the runway and in the jeweller's window.

From runway to jeweller's window

JCK's Victoria Gomelsky reported in September 2025 that the autumn runways had turned away from silver and the pared-back palette of 'quiet luxury' towards bold yellow gold, quoting Marie Claire's Sara Holzman that gold which once felt gauche "suddenly looks right at home". The trend reached engagement rings too: Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds told JCK that yellow gold was writing "a new chapter" for the engagement ring. Holiday buying, the same report said, favoured chunky hoops, layering, charms, lockets and vintage or antique yellow gold.

What jewellers are seeing in 2026

In Country & Town House's 2026 trend report, Charlie Pragnell of Pragnell described a shift to yellow gold, particularly chunkier styles worn stacked or layered. The same report named coloured gemstones and the return of the brooch among the year's trends.

Buyers are spending more on gold jewellery, and buying less of it by weight.

Less gold, more spent

High gold prices have changed how people buy. The World Gold Council said on 3 November that world jewellery demand fell 17% to 313 tonnes in the third quarter of 2026, while spending on jewellery edged up to $43bn. Buyers are choosing fewer pieces and paying more for each, which favours jewellery with design, workmanship and history.

Why antique gold fits the look

Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian jewellery was made almost entirely in yellow gold, often 15ct or 18KT, with chased, engraved and enamelled surfaces that modern machine-made chains do not have. Antique bracelets, lockets and chains give the chunky, layered look with a history behind it.
