This week's moment

Alexa Chung confirmed her engagement to Tom Sturridge with a Tudor table-cut ring, reported by The Sun on 26 October and People on 27 October; we covered the ring on 26 October. Table cuts are among the oldest diamond cuts, from before the brilliant cut was invented.

Why old cuts are in demand

The jeweller Frank Darling wrote in August that since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement it has seen a boom in requests for antique-inspired cuts, especially old mine diamonds. At the Oscars in March, Elle Fanning wore a vintage Cartier necklace from 1904, in platinum with round old-cut diamonds.

Every old-cut diamond was shaped by hand, so no two are the same.

If you have an old-cut diamond ring

Old mine diamonds have a cushion outline and a small flat top facet; old European cuts are round with a large culet you can often see through the top. Both are usually set in yellow gold or platinum mounts made in the 19th or early 20th century. Do not have the stone recut or the ring resized before selling. Send us photographs for a free valuation, or sell it by post with free insured collection.
