Behind door 24 of every calendar is a colour Snowman 50p. In just one, it is solid gold.

In short

The Royal Mint's The Snowman 2026 advent calendar holds 23 chocolate coins and, behind door 24, a colour edition of the 2026 Snowman 50p. According to the Royal Mint, one calendar instead contains a 2026 UK gold 50p for its owner to find on Christmas Eve.

What the Royal Mint has announced

The Royal Mint has brought back its Snowman advent calendar for Christmas 2026. As reported by the Irish News on 14 October 2026, each calendar costs £39.95 and holds 23 chocolate coins, with a colour uncirculated edition of The Snowman 2026 50p behind the 24th door. On its Snowman collection page, the Royal Mint says one recipient will find a 2026 UK gold 50p behind door 24 on Christmas Eve. The Irish News describes it as a 22 carat gold version of the coin.

The 2026 design is by animator and illustrator Robin Shaw and shows James and the Snowman putting the finishing touches to a Christmas tree. The Royal Mint lists the standard 50p as cupro-nickel, the same alloy as everyday 50ps, although these commemorative coins are sold in packs rather than issued into circulation.

A long-running series

Raymond Briggs published his wordless picture book The Snowman in 1978, and the 1982 animated film made it a Christmas fixture on British television. The character first appeared on a UK coin in 2018, and the 2026 issue is the ninth Snowman coin, according to the Irish News. Hiding a single gold coin in one calendar has become part of the Royal Mint's Christmas range in recent years.

A gold proof is struck more slowly and with polished dies, and it is made in far smaller numbers than an everyday coin.

Why gold proof coins are collected

Gold commemoratives sit between two markets. Their gold gives them a floor, but collectors buy them for the design, the finish and the small size of the issue. Proof coins are struck more than once with polished dies, giving mirror fields and frosted designs, and they are usually sold with a case and a numbered certificate.

When a gold commemorative comes to be sold, the details matter: the original case and certificate, untouched surfaces with no fingerprints or cleaning marks, and the stated edition limit. A proof that has lost its paperwork or been handled out of its capsule is harder to place with collectors.

If you collect modern commemoratives

Keep everything: the box, the certificate, and the outer sleeve. Store coins in their capsules, away from damp, and handle them only by the edge. Those habits do more for a collection than any single purchase.
