What the Royal Mint reported

In its latest update on precious metals, published on 21 October 2026, the Royal Mint said silver bullion purchases on royalmint.com rose by 295% in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Revenue from silver bullion coins rose by 323%, and platinum bullion revenue by 118%. With a quarter of the year still to go, sales of both metals have already passed every previous full year on record.

Gold also picked up. The Royal Mint said revenue from gold coin purchases rose 21% in July to September compared with April to June, and was up 10% for the first nine months of the year. It does not publish exact sales figures, only these percentage changes.

More first-time buyers

The figure that stands out for the wider market is who is buying. Almost three in ten customers who bought precious metals from the Royal Mint in the third quarter were buying for the first time, and new customers were up 13% on the previous quarter. Stuart O'Reilly, Private Wealth Consultant at the Royal Mint, said the rise in first-time buyers was "encouraging".

Every coin bought today is a coin someone will one day want to sell, value or pass on.

What it means if you own coins or bars

More people in Britain now hold sovereigns, Britannias, silver bars and commemorative coins than at any time we can remember. When the time comes to sell, three things matter far more than the headlines:

What the piece is. A bullion coin, a proof coin in its case and a rare date are bought on different terms. A proof piedfort with its certificate is a collector's coin first.

Condition and paperwork. Keep coins in their capsules and cases, with certificates and invoices. Cleaned or handled coins lose their appeal to collectors.

Who you sell to. Ask for each coin to be looked at individually, and for a written offer, before anything is melted or bundled into a single figure.
