Rare King Charles Atlantic Salmon 50p Sells for More Than 200 Times Face Value
16 October 2026 · Mozeris Fine Antiques

A coin from the first everyday designs of the King's reign drew a bidding war online, and its rarity comes down to one number: how many were made.

In short

A 2023 King Charles III Atlantic Salmon 50p sold on eBay for £123 after 37 bids, more than 200 times its face value, according to reports published in mid October 2026. The Royal Mint says 200,000 were made, which makes it the rarest 50p in circulation.

The sale

A 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p attracted 37 bids on eBay before selling for £123, according to reports syndicated across local newspapers including the Times and Star and the Royston Crow in mid October 2026. That is more than 200 times the coin's face value. The reports describe a completed auction rather than an asking price.

Why this coin

The Atlantic Salmon 50p was released by the Royal Mint in 2023 as part of the first everyday coin designs of King Charles III's reign, a set that celebrates British wildlife and plants. The obverse carries Martin Jennings' portrait of the King.

Its appeal is scarcity. According to the Royal Mint's figures, only 200,000 were struck for circulation. That puts it below the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, with 210,000, which held the title of rarest circulating 50p for around fifteen years. Collectors who want a full set of circulating designs need one, and with so few in change, demand runs ahead of supply.

For circulating coins, the mintage figure is the starting point; condition and demand do the rest.

A word on online sale prices

One eBay result is one sale between one buyer and one seller on one day. Some widely shared "sold for" figures turn out to be unpaid bids or asking prices, and two auctions for the same coin can finish far apart. This sale was reported as completed, but it describes that coin, not every Atlantic Salmon 50p in circulation.

What makes a coin collectable

Whether it is a modern 50p or a Georgian gold coin, the same factors decide how collectors treat it:

Mintage. How many were struck, and how many survive.

Condition. Wear, scratches and cleaning all count against a coin. Uncirculated pieces in original packs are judged differently from coins out of a purse.

Variety and error. Die varieties and genuine mint errors are sought after, but they need checking by someone who knows the series.

Demand. A popular theme or a set that collectors are trying to complete can matter as much as rarity.
