The Cluedo 50p: what it is
The Royal Mint launched the Cluedo 50p on 28 September 2026, the first time the board game has appeared on a UK coin. The tails side shows the six original suspects, Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green and Mrs White, over a background of tiny microtext naming the rooms and weapons, with the words "WHO, WHERE AND WITH WHAT?".
The reverse is by Henry Gray; the King's portrait is by Martin Jennings. The Royal Mint marks it as celebrating over 75 years of Cluedo, which Anthony Pratt devised in Birmingham in 1943 and Waddingtons first made in 1949.
| Version | Metal | Weight | Maximum mintage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brilliant Uncirculated | Cupro-nickel | 8 g | No limit published |
| Brilliant Uncirculated, colour | Cupro-nickel | 8 g | No limit published |
| Silver proof, colour | Sterling silver (.925) | 8 g | 4,511 |
| Gold proof | 22ct gold (916.7) | 15.5 g | 90 |

- Price at launch: from £19.95 for the Brilliant Uncirculated pack; the silver proof is £99.50 (Westminster Collection).
- The competition: the Royal Mint's free "Case of the Missing Coin" gives one gold proof to a winner who solves three weekly clues. It closes at 23:59 on 18 October 2026, for UK residents aged 18 and over, one entry per household (Royal Mint terms). Brit Brief and NationalWorld put the prize at over £2,000.
- Strike your own: from 6 October 2026, visitors to the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales, can strike a Cluedo 50p themselves.
Is the Cluedo 50p worth more than 50p?
It depends entirely on which version you have. Every one of them is legal tender for 50p, but they are different objects.
Circulation, BU and proof

- Circulated coins are struck fast, by the million, and go into tills and pockets.
- Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins are struck to a higher standard and sealed in a pack, never handled.
- Proof coins are struck more than once with polished dies, giving mirror fields and frosted detail. They come in a capsule and case with a certificate.
At launch the Cluedo 50p is sold only in the collector finishes, and none of the launch material mentions a release into circulation. You will not find one in your change unless somebody spends a BU coin.
Version by version
- BU and BU colour: a 50p sold in a collector pack. No mintage limit is published, so what you pay for is the pack and the design. Keep it sealed: an opened, handled coin is just a 50p to most buyers.
- Silver proof: 8 g of sterling silver, in an edition of up to 4,511. Its value to a buyer rests on the box, the certificate and demand from collectors.
- Gold proof: 15.5 g of 22ct gold. With only 90 struck, it is by far the scarcest version.

Gold proofs: keep the case
A gold proof 50p is valued on its gold and on what collectors will pay, and they pay most for a coin still sealed in its capsule, with the case and the numbered certificate.

The Cluedo 50p is too new to have a record of resale prices. Anything you see on eBay today is an asking price, not what coins have sold for.

The rarest UK 50p coins, and why they are wanted

Mintage first, then demand
A 50p is rare when few were made for circulation. Most designs run to millions; the coins below were made in hundreds of thousands or low millions.
For 15 years the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, designed by Christopher Le Brun for the gardens' 250th anniversary, was the rarest. In October 2024 the Royal Mint revealed that the 2023 Atlantic Salmon, one of the first King Charles III designs, was rarer still.
| 50p | Mintage | Why it is wanted |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic Salmon, 2023 | 200,000 | The lowest circulation mintage of any UK 50p |
| Kew Gardens, 2009 | 210,000 | The rarest 50p for 15 years; only the 2009 date |
| Olympic Aquatics, 2011, "lines over face" | No official figure | An early die, replaced soon after |
| Olympic Football, 2011 | 1,125,500 | The lowest of the 2011 Olympic designs |

Next on the Royal Mint's list come the other 2011 Olympic designs, Wrestling (1,129,500), Judo (1,161,500) and Triathlon (1,163,500), then the 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny (1,400,000 each).
Two points the headlines often skip. The Aquatics "lines over face" coin is an early version in which water lines cross the swimmer's face; Spink's catalogue describes it as one of only 600 believed struck before the dies were changed. A top-grade example (NGC MS65) sold for £3,800 at Spink in London on 30 September 2025 (lot 387). The ordinary Aquatics 50p, with a clear face, was made in its millions.
And the Royal Mint struck the Kew Gardens design again, dated 2019, for its 50 Years of the 50p collector set. Only the 2009 coin is the rarity.
How to check the 50p in your change

Five checks, one minute
- Turn it over. Look at the tails side for one of the designs above.
- Read the date. Kew Gardens must be 2009; the Atlantic Salmon is 2023.
- Check the size. Every 50p made since 1997 is 27.3 mm across and weighs 8 g. A coin that is clearly lighter, heavier or the wrong size is not genuine.
- Look at the wear. Crisp detail and original shine count for more.
- Do not clean it. Polish and dips leave fine scratches and an unnatural shine.

Condition: where wear shows first
Wear starts on the highest points of the design: the cheek, the hair, the edge of a crown. Fine scratches across the fields follow.
Collectors grade on exactly this, from worn through fine to uncirculated. A coin from a sealed Royal Mint pack sits at the top; one from a pocket, however rare, sells for less.
eBay listings: asking prices are not sale prices

Listed is not sold
Every few weeks a story says a 50p is "worth" hundreds or thousands, because someone has listed it at that price.
Anyone can list a coin at any price. An asking price is a hope, not a sale.
- Check the mintage. Compare the design with the Royal Mint's figures. A design made in the tens of millions is worth 50p however it is described.
- Be wary of "error" coins. Real mint errors are scarce and are documented. A scratch, a stain or a worn edge is damage, not an error.
- Painted coins are not Royal Mint colour coins. Colour added to an ordinary coin by a third party is decoration, and sells for little more than the coin.
- One sale is not a market. A single bidding war says little about the next coin.
Which? found the same in its October 2019 review of rare 50ps: with newer coins listed on eBay, buyers cannot be sure of paying a fair price, and the experts it spoke to said commemorative coins are bought to enjoy, not as an investment.
How to sell coins
Where to sell depends on what the coin is made of.
Gold coins: sell to a gold buyer
Gold proofs, sovereigns, Krugerrands and other gold coins are valued on their gold, and on what collectors will pay for scarce dates and boxed proofs.
We buy them directly. See sell gold sovereign coins, gold sovereign value by year and sell Krugerrands.

Silver coins: check the date
UK silver coins dated before 1947 contain real silver (sterling up to 1920, 50% silver from 1920 to 1946), so the date decides what they are made of.
See selling pre-1947 silver coins, pre-1920 silver coins, silver coin values and Maundy money.
Base-metal 50ps
Cupro-nickel 50ps, including the Kew Gardens and the Atlantic Salmon, are sold collector to collector, usually on eBay or through coin clubs. We do not buy them.

Questions we are asked
Is the Cluedo 50p in circulation?
No. At launch on 28 September 2026 the Royal Mint sells it only in Brilliant Uncirculated, colour, silver proof and gold proof versions, and none of the launch material mentions coins going into circulation.
How many Cluedo 50p coins were made?
The Royal Mint lists a maximum mintage of 4,511 for the silver proof and 90 for the gold proof. The Brilliant Uncirculated versions have no published limit.
How much is the gold Cluedo 50p worth?
It is struck in 22ct gold in an edition of only 90, so both the gold and collector demand count, along with the case and certificate. Brit Brief and NationalWorld reported the competition prize as worth over £2,000. Have one? Send us photos for a free valuation.
How do I enter the Cluedo 50p competition?
Through the Royal Mint's "Case of the Missing Coin" page: solve the three weekly clues and enter by 23:59 on 18 October 2026. It is free, for UK residents aged 18 and over, one entry per household.
What is the rarest 50p coin?
The 2023 Atlantic Salmon, with 200,000 made for circulation, followed by the 2009 Kew Gardens at 210,000, according to the Royal Mint.
Is my Kew Gardens 50p the rare one?
Only if it is dated 2009, when 210,000 were made for circulation. Coins dated 2019 come from a later collector set and are not the rare one. Condition counts too: crisp detail is worth more than a worn coin.
Should I clean an old coin before selling it?
No. Cleaning leaves fine scratches and an unnatural shine, and collectors pay less for a cleaned coin.
Do you buy 50p coins?
We buy gold and silver coins, including gold proof 50ps, sovereigns and pre-1947 silver. Cupro-nickel 50ps are best sold to collectors.
