Silver-topped gold

Victorian diamond brooches were usually made in silver over gold: silver on the front so the diamonds look white, gold behind so the back does not tarnish against clothing.

A diamond sits in a silver collet on the front face, which is a layer of silver joined to a layer of gold behind it. En tremblant

Some flower brooches have their heads mounted on fine springs so they tremble with movement and catch the light.

Bar brooches, cameos and portraits

Narrow bar brooches set with a line of stones, carved shell and hardstone cameos, and painted miniature portraits under glass were all made through the period.

British gold brooches were made in 18KT and 15KT, and from 1854 also in 12KT and 9KT. Each listing gives the metal and any marks.

Questions about Victorian brooches

How can you tell if a brooch is Victorian?

From the construction (silver-topped gold settings, closed or open backs, the type of pin and catch), the cut of the stones (rose cut and old mine cut diamonds) and any hallmarks. Each listing states the period.

What is an en tremblant brooch?

A brooch with parts mounted on fine springs so that they tremble when the wearer moves.

Why is the front of a Victorian diamond brooch silver?

Silver was set over gold so the diamonds appear white, while the gold back stays bright and does not mark clothing.

Can a brooch be worn as a pendant?

Some Victorian brooches were made with a hidden pendant loop; the listing says where a piece has one.
