How they differ from modern brilliants
Old cuts were shaped by hand to keep weight, so they show broad flashes of light rather than the fine sparkle of a modern brilliant.
Old mine cut
The old mine cut is a cushion-shaped diamond with a high crown, a small table and a large culet, the main cut of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The old mine cutOld European cut
The old European cut is round, with a small table, a high crown and an open culet. It was the usual round cut from about 1890 to the 1930s.
