The sale

Stanley Gibbons Baldwin's, the London stamp, coin and collectables auction house, calls the sale the start of a new era for its trading card auctions. It takes place at The Vault in the lower lobby of Frasers House on Middle Road, Singapore, and online, according to the sale page. Lots collected in Singapore are subject to 9% GST; the rest will be exported and dispatched to buyers from the United Kingdom. The buyer's premium is 23%.

A trophy card with its stand

Lot 14 is a Victory Orb Mew, a card awarded to top finishers at the 2005 Summer Battle Road tournaments in Japan. This example comes with its acrylic first-place stand, which Stanley Gibbons says was given to the original owner for winning, and what was likely its original cardboard shipping box. The lot page describes only very minor marks on the border and surface, and the estimate is SG$25,000 to 35,000. Trophy cards were never sold in shops, which is why so few exist. Our Pokémon trophy cards guide explains the main types.

Two lottery promos in PSA 10

Lot 28 pairs a Shiny Ho-Oh 065/L-P and a Shiny Lugia 066/L-P from Japan's 2010 Shiny Pokémon Present Campaign, a lottery in which the cards could only be won. Both are graded Gem Mint 10 by PSA, with sequential certification numbers. The estimate is SG$80,000 to 100,000, and the lot page showed pre-sale bids of SG$210,000 on the morning of 29 October.

Sealed boxes and a Magic card

Other lots include a factory-sealed unlimited Gym Heroes booster box from 2000 (lot 8), two Japanese Pikachu Poncho special boxes, one with Mega Charizard Y (lot 11) and one with Magikarp and Gyarados from the Pokémon Center Hiroshima (lot 13), and lot 1, a Smaug the Magnificent Gleaming Gold card from Magic: The Gathering's 2026 The Hobbit set. Graded singles include a PSA 9 Latias & Latios GX from Team Up and a CGC 6.5 Mudkip Gold Star from EX Team Rocket Returns. We will report the results next week.

What makes a card collectable

Scarcity, the way a card was distributed, its grade and the grading company, language and condition all count. Japanese promos and tournament cards are often far rarer than set cards. See our guides to Japanese and English Pokémon cards and Pokémon card grading in the UK, or browse our graded Pokémon cards. If you have cards to sell, see how to sell Pokémon cards with us. Every collection is different: send us a few photos and we will tell you what yours is worth, free and with no obligation.
