The Brancards
Flat, parallel vertical bars frame the dial and flow straight into the strap — the defining feature, said to echo the tracks of a tank viewed from above.
Roman Numerals
Crisp black Roman numerals on a clean white or silvered dial, with a fine "chemin de fer" (railway) minute track running around the edge.
Blued Sword Hands
Slim blued-steel sword-shaped hands — elegant, sharp and instantly Cartier.
Sapphire Cabochon
A faceted blue sapphire cabochon set into the winding crown — a small but telling signature of the maison.

Famous Tanks in the news: Jackie Kennedy's "cursed" Cartier
The most talked-about Tank of autumn 2026 is a gold watch that belonged to Jacqueline Kennedy. Its back is engraved "Stas to Jackie 23 Feb. 63 2:05 am to 9:35 pm", a gift from her brother-in-law, Prince Stanislas Radziwill, marking a 50-mile walk he completed in Palm Beach in February 1963 in answer to President Kennedy's fitness challenge.
The sale
Christie's New York, "Rare Watches and American Icons", June 2017. The 18ct gold Tank sold with a thank-you painting by Jackie for $379,500, against a top estimate of $120,000 (National Jeweler).
The buyer
Kim Kardashian was reported as the buyer at the time, and the story returned in September 2026 when Carole Radziwill discussed the sale on the Financial Tea podcast (Yahoo Style, 11 Sep 2026).
The "curse"
The legend, as Carole Radziwill tells it: three women connected with the watch were each widowed in their thirties. By her account the original never went to Kardashian's home and now rests in Cartier's own archive. A story, not a fact, but it shows how provenance turns a gold watch into a headline.
Diana's Tank
The Duchess of Sussex has been photographed since 2020 wearing an all-gold Cartier Tank Française that belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales (Harper's Bazaar). It is one reason the gold Tank is among the most searched watches in the UK.
