United States Capitol Bicentennial silver dollar, a 1994 commemorative coin in 0.900 fine silver with the dome picked out in 24 carat gold, struck two hundred years after the Capitol cornerstone was laid.
George Washington laid the cornerstone on 18 September 1793. The building was burned by British troops in 1814 and rebuilt, and the cast iron dome that appears on this coin was completed during the Civil War.
The obverse shows the dome crowned by Thomas Crawford's Statue of Freedom inside a ring of stars. The reverse carries an eagle above a shield flanked by flags. Surcharges from the issue went to the United States Capitol Preservation Commission.
