Antique Rings FAQs

Common questions about buying, wearing, and caring for antique rings

A ring is generally considered antique when it is at least 100 years old. Our collection spans Georgian (roughly 1714–1837), Victorian (1837–1901), Edwardian (1901–1910), and Art Deco (1920s–1930s) periods. Each era has distinct design characteristics, materials, and construction techniques.
Our in-house specialists examine each ring using hallmark identification, construction analysis, metal testing, and gemstone assessment. We study setting techniques and tool marks to confirm the period. For gemstones, we assess cut, clarity, and era-typical characteristics — such as the distinctive pattern of an old mine cut diamond.
Many antique engagement rings have survived decades of wear, which speaks to their craftsmanship. Platinum or high-karat gold rings with secure settings are generally well-suited to daily wear. Delicate designs — particularly fine Edwardian filigree or rings with softer stones like opals — may benefit from extra care. We are happy to advise on any specific piece.
An old mine cut diamond is a hand-cut style found in Georgian and Victorian jewellery. It has a cushion-shaped outline, small table facet, high crown, and large open culet. Compared to modern brilliant cuts, old mine cuts produce broader flashes of light and a warm, romantic sparkle that collectors prize.
Some can, but it depends on the design, metal, and condition. Simple bands and solitaires are usually straightforward. Rings with continuous patterns — such as an antique eternity band — channel-set stones, or fragile filigree may not be suitable. We recommend discussing resizing with our team before purchasing.
This varies. Some arrive with original or period-correct boxes, though given their age this is uncommon. We always note in the listing if documentation is included. Every ring purchased from Mozeris is presented in our branded packaging.

For antique diamond rings, check the cut style (old mine, rose, or European cut), setting condition, and symmetry. An antique emerald ring will have natural inclusions — some character is expected. An antique sapphire and diamond ring should show vivid, even colour. With antique opal rings, look for strong play of colour and no cracking. Buying from a dealer who authenticates in-house gives confidence in quality and provenance.
