Statue of Liberty Centennial silver dollar, a 1986 United States commemorative coin in 0.900 fine silver with Liberty and the Ellis Island hall picked out in 24 carat gold, struck a hundred years after the statue was dedicated.
The statue was a gift from France, dedicated on 28 October 1886. Ellis Island opened as the federal immigration station in 1892 and about twelve million people passed through it before it closed in 1954.
The obverse was designed by John Mercanti and shows the statue against the immigration building with the inscription Ellis Island Gateway to America. The reverse carries Liberty's torch and the lines from the Emma Lazarus sonnet cast on the pedestal, give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The programme raised the money that restored both the statue and the island.
