South Africa five shillings dated 1948, the first year of the springbok crown, struck at Pretoria in 0.800 silver.
The springbok reverse by Coert Steynberg replaced the sailing ship of the earlier issues and ran from 1947. 1948 is the first year the design appears with the George VI portrait in its final form, with a mintage of 780,000.
The obverse carries the bare head of George VI with the Latin legend Georgivs Sextvs Rex. The coin is a crown sized piece on the same 38.61 mm module as the British crown, struck in 0.800 rather than sterling silver.
