Morgan Silver Dollar 1921, Final Year United States 90 Percent Silver Coin

£195.00

Morgan silver dollar dated 1921, a United States one dollar coin in 0.900 fine silver, struck at Philadelphia in the final year of the series.

The Morgan dollar ran from 1878 to 1904 and was then revived for a single year in 1921 under the Pittman Act, which required the Treasury to replace silver dollars melted during the First World War. The 1921 dies were cut fresh in shallower relief, so the year stands apart from the earlier issues.

The obverse carries Liberty in a Phrygian cap wreathed with cotton and wheat, designed by George T. Morgan, who came to the United States Mint from the Royal Mint in London. The reverse sets an eagle with outstretched wings above a wreath. The Peace dollar replaced it later the same year.
