The Morgan dollar was authorised by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which obliged the Treasury to buy silver and strike it into dollars. Philadelphia coins carry no mintmark, the blank space below the wreath marking the parent mint.
The obverse carries Liberty in a Phrygian cap wreathed with cotton and wheat, designed by George T. Morgan, who came to the United States Mint from the Royal Mint in London. The reverse sets an eagle with outstretched wings above a wreath.
