First Flight Centennial silver dollar, a 2003 United States commemorative coin in 0.900 fine silver with the Wright Flyer picked out in 24 carat gold, struck for the hundredth anniversary of the first powered flight.
Orville Wright flew 120 feet in twelve seconds at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on 17 December 1903. The brothers made four flights that morning, the longest 852 feet, before a gust overturned the machine.
Both faces were designed by Norman E. Nemeth. The obverse carries busts of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The reverse shows the Flyer lifting from its launching rail with the Kitty Hawk dunes behind, and it is this face that carries the gilding.
