Columbus Quincentenary silver dollar, a 1992 United States commemorative coin in 0.900 fine silver with the figure of Columbus picked out in 24 carat gold, struck five hundred years after the first crossing.
Christopher Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas on 12 October 1492 with the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina, having sailed from Palos de la Frontera that August under the Spanish crown.
The obverse shows Columbus ashore holding a standard, his three ships riding behind him. The reverse pairs the Santa Maria above with the Space Shuttle Discovery below and the dates 1492 and 1992, setting the two voyages of exploration against each other.
