A Stuart Devlin 18KT gold necklace, the chain built from cast links modelled as elongated human figures, spaced with natural coral beads and pearls. Struck with his SD mark and London hallmarked, made in the 1970s.
Each link is a stylised figure with arms raised and legs extended, joined hand to foot so the chain reads as a line of figures in motion. The gold is left with the textured, molten surface Devlin worked in, and at 83 cm the necklace is long enough to wear doubled or full length.
Stuart Devlin was born in Geelong, Australia in 1931, studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and then the Royal College of Art in London, and settled in London in 1965. He was granted the Royal Warrant as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen in 1982. The figural link chain is a documented Devlin model: an 18KT example of 1973 is recorded, described as a chain of elongated abstract human figures and signed with the same SD mark.
