Carnelian Intaglio Seal Fob from the Georgian Era

£1,980.00

Authentic Georgian Era Carnelian Intaglio Seal Fob: A Timeless Piece of History.

Antique Georgian 18kt gold seal set with a carnelian intaglio carved with the words I. Evcpuo Bois ( Possibly Roman intaglio ).
The seal comes with an original tag indicating that the stone was picked up and set by Lieutenant General Lord Crewe when living at Liege.

John Crewe, 2nd Baron Crewe, led a multifaceted life as an English soldier and peer. He hailed from a prestigious lineage, being the offspring of John Crewe (1742–1829), an affluent Whig politician who attained the title of the first Baron Crewe in 1806. His mother, Frances Anne Crewe, descended from Fulke Greville and was renowned as a charming and witty political hostess.

Around 1775, as a child, he posed for a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, adopting a stance and attire reminiscent of Hans Holbein the Younger's famous depiction of Henry VIII. Reynolds' painting is acclaimed as one of his finest representations of children, noted for its comedic quality. Horace Walpole remarked on the humour and satire in Reynolds' portrayal, contrasting Holbein's regal demeanor with the youthful cheer of Master Crewe.

Lord Crewe embarked on a military career in the 1790s. In 1793, serving as a Lieutenant, he participated in the Macartney Embassy to China, led by Lord Macartney, who happened to be his mother's cousin. Crewe advanced through the ranks, attaining Major-General status in 1808, Lieutenant-General in 1813, and full General by the 1830s, retiring in 1831.
