  • The Japanese 19th Century Mount Fuji Landscape 24kt Gold and Silver Damascene Cigarette Case is a true work of art.

Handcrafted by skilled artisans, this case features representation of Mount Fuji, Japan's most iconic mountain, rendered in 24kt gold and silver on a deep black background.
The intricate damascene technique, in which different metals are inlaid into each other, typically, gold or silver into a darkly oxidized steel background—to produce intricate patterns similar to niello.

The case is signed on the back, adding to its unique appeal, and measures 12.4 cm x 8.3 cm x 0.7 cm. It weighs 116 grams.

  • The Komai family of Kyoto became famous for their intricate metalwork in the Meiji Period (1868-1912). The company was founded in 1841 but it was only when Otojiro I took over in 1865 that it began to produce the works for which it is renowned. The workshop specialized in damascened work, inlaying gold and silver into iron using techniques such as kinsujizogan and nunomezogan. The lacquered black ground was made through several firings and burnishing, creating a distinctive style.

The central motifs in their work often depicted stories from Japanese history or mythology. Komai rarely exhibited under its own name at World Fairs, instead exhibiting under the name of the commissioning company Ikeda, which received numerous awards and prizes for the works. The Komai family has design books with drawings of many of their works and a list of their awards can be found in their promotional brochure.
