The Silver Eagle was authorised by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 and released in November 1986, the first official silver bullion coin of the United States. 1986 is the opening date of a series still running today.
The obverse reuses Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty from the half dollar of 1916 to 1947. The reverse carries a heraldic eagle behind a shield by John Mercanti, then an engraver and later Chief Engraver of the Mint.
