An individual London goldsmith
Alan Martin Gard's jewellery is the work of an individual London goldsmith and his workshop, not a jewellery house. Auction catalogue notes record that he was born in London in 1935, served a long apprenticeship with Crombies of Bond Street, worked with Andrew Grima and with Hooper Bolton, and set up his own workshop in the mid-1960s, later based in Hatton Garden. He is named alongside John Donald, David Thomas and Gillian Packard among the designers who changed British jewellery in the 1960s and 1970s. His work was shown at Goldsmiths' Hall and the Design Centre in London, and he made the jewellery for the film Nicholas and Alexandra.
Because so much of his output was individual, we value Gard jewellery piece by piece, from the piece itself.

We hold a signed Alan Gard 18KT gold, amethyst and diamond brooch-pendant, hallmarked in London in the 1970s: textured gold worked to look like bark and leaves around a large amethyst, with diamonds used as accents. It shows what we look for in his work: organic goldwork, stones chosen for colour and form, and a full London hallmark with his mark.

- The AMG maker's mark
Gard's British-made gold carries his AMG mark as part of a full hallmark.
- The London hallmark
The fineness (18 or 750 for 18KT gold), the leopard's head of the London Assay Office and the date letter, which gives the year. Auction records show London date letters on his work from the late 1960s and 1970s onwards.
- The date against the design
The date letter should fit the style of the piece. Auction records include an earlier ring that Gard himself authenticated and had hallmarked decades later, so a recent date letter on an earlier-looking design is a reason to ask, not necessarily a problem.
- The goldwork
Bark finishes, textured leaves and crystal settings are made by hand and finished on the back as well as the front.
- The stones
identified and graded. For stones without a laboratory certificate, our figures are careful estimates, not laboratory certified.
- Boxes and papers
Any box, certificate or receipt is checked against the piece itself: models, serial numbers and dates should agree.
