After a week of heavy falls for both metals, gold started Monday close to the $4,000 mark, with all eyes on the US Federal Reserve.
Gold traded around $4,000 an ounce on Monday 26 October 2026, close to its lowest level in more than three months, according to Trading Economics. Last week gold futures fell about 4% and silver futures nearly 6%, CNBC-TV18 reported. The US Federal Reserve meets on 27 and 28 October and is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged.
Where the week starts
Gold began the week trading around the $4,000 an ounce mark, hovering near its lowest level in more than three months, Trading Economics reported on Monday. Investors were weighing tension in the Middle East against the prospect of higher interest rates. We covered the slide itself in Gold Falls Toward $4,000, a Near Three-Month Low and the week's close in Silver and Gold End a Heavy Week Lower.
How heavy last week was
CNBC-TV18 put last week's fall in gold futures at about 4.1% and in silver futures at nearly 6%, the sharpest weekly drop for both metals in some time. Silver had already touched its lowest level since November 2025 on Friday, Reuters reported. CNBC-TV18 pointed to firmer bond yields and a stronger dollar, Brent crude settling above $117 a barrel, and, for silver, weaker industrial demand.
Why a rates decision moves metal
Gold pays no interest. When interest rates are expected to stay high or rise, holding gold costs more in income given up, and the price tends to soften. Dearer oil feeds inflation, which makes higher rates more likely. That is why this week's Federal Reserve meeting on 27 and 28 October matters to the market. Trading Economics said the Fed is widely expected to hold rates this week, with the possibility of a rise in December. What the Fed says about the path ahead is what traders will be listening for.
What it means for jewellery, coins and silver
The market price is one input, not the whole answer. A signed jewel, a hallmarked piece of Georgian silver or a scarce date coin is judged on its maker, marks, rarity and condition, and those do not move with the Fed.
