Victorian 9KT Gold & Silver Natural Pearl, Ruby & Rose-Cut Diamond Fish Brooch c.1870s
A very unusual and rare Victorian brooch modelled as a fish, dating from the 1870s. The body is formed from a large natural baroque pearl with strong lustre, while the tail, fins, and rear section are pave-set with rose-cut diamonds in silver-topped settings, a classic period technique that allows the diamonds to read bright against the darkened silver.
A small natural ruby is set as the eye, adding a vivid accent against the creamy pearl. The reverse and pin construction incorporate 9KT gold, in keeping with English Victorian jewellery of this type. The design is highly sculptural and full of character, combining natural pearl, coloured stone, and diamond work in a single coherent motif.
