Georgian 22KT Gold Snake Necklace with Heart Locket
Georgian 22KT gold snake necklace, a flexible chain of granulated flower links ending in a chased serpent's head that holds a heart locket in its jaws.
The chain is woven from small granulated rosettes into a supple tube, with engraved scale pattern sleeves and fan shell collars at each end. The head is worked in repoussé and chased with scales, shells and foliage, set with faceted green eyes, and the body loops round and tucks through the head to fasten. A small red stone sits at the tip of the tail.
The heart locket is chased with scrolls on the front, with a glazed compartment at the back of the kind made to hold a lock of hair. The serpent, a symbol of eternal love, was a favourite motif of late Georgian jewellery.
