19th century carved amethyst cameo ring in 18KT gold, the oval amethyst carved in high relief with a bearded classical male head in right profile.
The carving is crisp, with a curled beard, a band in the hair and drapery falling at the back of the head, all raised from a plain polished field. Carved gems after the antique were a mainstay of Neoclassical and Grand Tour jewellery in the 19th century.
The amethyst sits in a closed back rubbed over bezel with a stepped double rim engraved with border lines, on plain tapering shoulders and a D section shank.
