Vintage French silver Virgin Mary medal pendant, the Madonna in veiled profile within a halo and outer border of deep blue plique-à-jour enamel.
Plique-à-jour enamel is fired into open cells with no metal backing, so light passes straight through it in the manner of stained glass. Here the cells form two rings of small blue panels, one as a halo behind the head and one around the edge of the medal, and the same panels show on the reverse. The portrait is struck in relief with the veil falling in soft folds, in the tradition of the French devotional medals of the early 20th century. The front is signed with the engraver's initials and bears French hallmarks, and the reverse is stamped ARGENT.
