A Victorian 18KT gold snake bangle, formed as two serpents meeting head to head, each head set with a step cut sapphire and rose cut diamonds. Nineteenth century, and 45.7 grams of gold.
The bodies are chased the whole way round with overlapping scales, worked finer as they taper towards the heads, and the two heads rise and turn to face one another where the bangle opens. Each is crowned with a triangular step cut sapphire in a collet, with rose cut diamonds set into the brows in white metal so they sit bright against the gold.
The serpent came back into English jewellery after Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring in 1839, and stayed there for the rest of the century as a symbol of eternity.
