An opal and diamond ring in 18KT white gold, English and hallmarked BMP, made in the 1970s. The opal is a large solid stone cut as an oval cabochon, with green and blue play of colour running across the dome.
A continuous row of round brilliant cut diamonds frames the stone, and the gallery beneath is pierced and open so light reaches the opal from below. Solid opal is cut from a single piece of rough, rather than built up in layers as a doublet or triplet.
Opal is a softer stone than most and takes a knock more easily, so it suits occasional wear rather than daily use.
