Kokichi Mikimoto patented the process for culturing a whole round pearl in 1916 and the house has set the standard for cultured pearl quality since. Mikimoto grades its own pearls more tightly than the trade requires, which is why the matching across a suite like this holds up.
Each piece is built as a radiating starburst. Fine diamond set spokes spring from a diamond centre and carry round cultured pearls along their length and at their tips, so the whole reads as a burst of light rather than a flat cluster. The brooch takes sixteen pearls rising to 7 mm, each earring twelve to 5 mm, on the same geometry, so the three pieces read as one suite rather than a made up group.
