A French Art Deco ring centred on an emerald cut natural Colombian emerald of approximately 2.00 ct, framed by fourteen old cut diamonds. Circa 1920s, in 18KT yellow and white gold.
The emerald is a clean, saturated green with the slightly bluish cast that marks Colombian material, and is held in a fine collet with the diamonds set in millegrained white gold around it. The rectangular cluster sits on a yellow gold shank with pierced scroll shoulders, the two colours of gold used deliberately so the white frames the stones and the yellow carries the ring.
Colombia has been the principal source of fine emerald since the sixteenth century, and remains the origin against which others are measured.
