Boucheron Paris bird brooch in 18KT gold, a fledgling modelled with its wings open on a branch, the feathers chased throughout and the eye set with a ruby.
Boucheron has worked the bird since the nineteenth century and the house handles it as sculpture rather than as an outline. The body here is built up in overlapping chased scales that run from the throat down over the breast, the wings are engraved with fine parallel quills to their tips, and the tail splits into two feathers behind. The bird grips a bare branch that forks out on either side of its feet. A single ruby is set into the head for the eye, the one point of colour in the piece. The reverse is signed Boucheron Paris, numbered, and struck with the French assay mark, with a hinged pin and catch running across the wings.
