Art Nouveau Plique-à-Jour Enamel Pendant Necklace, 18KT Gold, Circa 1910
An exceptional Art Nouveau pendant in 18KT gold, circa 1910, the profile of a young woman modelled in high-relief gold and set against a panel of plique-à-jour enamel worked with stylised daisies in soft green, blue and rose.
Plique-à-jour is the most demanding of all enamelling techniques — the enamel is suspended in an open metal framework with no backing, so light passes straight through it like a miniature stained-glass window. Very few workshops attempted it, fewer still survive intact, and losses or cracks are the norm rather than the exception.
The sinuous whiplash frame, the dreaming female profile and the flowing floral ground are the defining motifs of the Art Nouveau movement, here with rose-cut diamond accents and the original fine gold chain. A museum-quality example of the period.
