Archaeological revival high carat gold ring set with an oval onyx intaglio, the shoulders modelled as lion heads and the bezel worked in fine granulation.
The mount is built in the manner the Castellani workshop revived in Rome from the 1850s, after Etruscan goldwork excavated at Cerveteri and Vulci. Granulation, the fusing of minute gold spheres to a surface without visible solder, had been lost for centuries and its recovery drove the whole archaeological revival movement.
Applied lion heads flank the bezel and the shank is left plain and heavy. The onyx is carved in intaglio with a helmeted classical head.
