An antique French 18KT gold signet ring, the oval head intaglio engraved with a heraldic shield below a knight's helm. Early 20th century, and struck with the French eagle's head mark for 18KT gold.
The helm is cut in profile above the shield, the arrangement used on a full achievement of arms, and the shield beneath carries three plant devices on a hatched field. The engraving is cut in reverse so that it reads correctly when struck into wax.
At 13.1 grams with a 2.4 by 2.2 cm head, this is a substantial ring that sits square on the finger, in the larger sizes antique gentlemen's signets were usually made in.
