An Alan Martin Gard 18KT gold brooch that converts to a pendant, set with large natural amethyst crystals and brilliant cut diamonds. Fully hallmarked London with his AMG maker's mark, made in the 1970s.
The amethysts radiate from the centre like a burst, each one a substantial stone in deep purple, and between them Gard has laid textured gold leaves worked to a bark finish. Six small brilliant cut diamonds are set among them, used as points of light rather than as the subject. At 45.2 grams this is a heavy piece of goldsmithing.
Alan Gard was born in London in 1935, served a seven year apprenticeship at Crombies of Bond Street and then worked with Andrew Grima. Alongside John Donald, David Thomas and Gillian Packard he was part of the group who remade British jewellery in the 1960s and 1970s. His Lilypad brooch of 1967 was owned by Princess Margaret and sold at Christie's in 2006. Using natural crystal forms and unpolished rough, with diamonds only as accents, is exactly the approach his work is known for.
