Nineteenth century 18KT gold ring set with a large oval hardstone cameo carved in relief with a seated classical figure, on a split shank.
Hardstone cameos are cut from banded agate, the carver working down through a pale upper layer to a dark one beneath so the figure stands out against its own ground. It is slow and unforgiving work, since a slip cannot be filled or disguised, and the best of it was done in Rome and Naples for the Grand Tour trade.
The stone is held in a plain rub over collet with a split shank behind, a mount that keeps the eye on the carving.
