Artist Biography – Mary E Carter
Mary Carter studied at the Royal College of Art (1968–1971), where she was awarded the Princess of Wales Scholarship as the most promising female student. Based in Devon, she has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition since 1969, receiving the Friends Miniature Prize in 1987.
Her paintings, often focusing on faces, figures, and interiors, are noted for their use of rich colour, fabric detail, and intimate scale. Her works are held in private collections in the UK and overseas.
Artist’s statement:
“I have always been fascinated by faces… most of my work is of heads or figures in interiors. Often I paint beautiful fabrics, lace, embroidery, satin or brocade, and the cats and children I know pose for me. Despite their small size, I hope my paintings have an intensity, stillness, and beauty that belies their scale.”
