An original watercolour by Sue Howells RWS, titled Morning Frost. The panoramic composition runs a single row of whitewashed cottages the full width of the sheet, with dark winter trees massed behind them and chimneys, washing lines and garden boundaries picked out in fine black marks.
Howells works loosely and with an economy of marks, laying in a wash first and letting one brushstroke lead into the next rather than describing every architectural detail. Buildings, trees and figures are left to emerge from the washes, with dark drawn marks pulled into the wet paint for roof lines, chimneys and branches.
The colour here is held back to blue grey, cream and pale terracotta, with black worked in wet for the trees and roof lines, so the picture keeps the flat cold light of a frost morning. The extended horizontal format suits the subject and is considerably wider than the artist's more usual small format works.
Sue Howells was born in Birmingham in 1948. She received the Solomon and Whitehead Award in 2008, the same year the Fine Art Trade Guild named her the best selling published artist in the UK. She was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2016 and became a full member in 2018. Her work is associated particularly with cottages, terraces, landscapes and scenes of everyday British life.
