The sky is worked in burnt orange and the wet pavement in pale gold, so the crowd reads almost entirely as silhouette. Figures move under black and red umbrellas, festoon lights and street lamps run across the top of the composition, and every upright is answered by a long reflection pulled down through the foreground.
Peter J Rodgers paints from his studio in Newcastle, and traces his subject back to childhood visits to the Quayside with his father. Weather and light carry his pictures: wet pavements, figures under umbrellas, strings of lamps and long vertical reflections dragged down through the foreground. Sell out solo exhibitions across the north of England led to shows in London, and his work is now held in collections in Europe, Canada and the United States.
