Populus is Craig Alan's method of assembling a recognisable image from a crowd seen from above. The figures here walk, stand in groups, cycle and stop to talk, and the architecture exists only where they gather most densely. People's Parliament has a sister piece in the same series, Tower of Strength.
The palette is held to black, grey and warm off white, which keeps the weight on the drawing rather than on colour. Hand applied embellishment across the canvas raises the surface in places and gives the crowd a physical texture that a flat print does not carry. The canvas is presented as a box canvas set within a deep black wooden floating frame.
