The sitter, Marie Louise Élisabeth d’Orléans (1695–1719), later Duchess of Berry, was a granddaughter of Louis XIV and a notable figure of the French court. Her life was marked by both privilege and scandal, from surviving multiple near-fatal illnesses as a child to her controversial marriage to Charles, Duke of Berry, at the Palace of Versailles in 1710.
