Vintage R. H. Rai & Co. Bombay Blue Leather Ring Box
A vintage ring presentation box retailed by R. H. Rai & Co., Bombay 1, an Indian jewellery firm established in Bombay in 1938.
The square case has a dark blue leather exterior with a decorative gilt border and a front push-button closure. It opens to reveal a cream satin-lined lid printed with the retailer’s name and a deep royal-blue velvet ring platform.
The central slot is wide enough to accommodate a substantial ring, cocktail ring, signet ring or broad-band design measuring up to approximately 3.1cm across.
The combination of blue leather, contrasting cream satin and rich velvet interior gives the box a strong mid-20th-century presentation style. Boxes from historic Bombay jewellery retailers are less commonly encountered in the UK market and appeal to collectors of Indian jewellery history and period retail packaging.
Dimensions -
Exterior: 5 x 4.2 cm
Interior capacity: Maximum Approximate Ring Head or Width: 3.1cm
Condition :
Fair vintage condition with visible wear consistent with age. The blue leather exterior displays rubbing and loss to sections of the gilt border. The cream satin lining has marks, discolouration and some wear around the hinge. A small area of rust-coloured staining is visible internally. The royal-blue velvet platform remains present, and the push-button fastening operates.
