  • The Russian silver gilded and cloisonné enamel tea glass holder is an exquisite example of the elaborate ornamental arts prominent in Russia in the late nineteenth century. The holder, designed by the well regarded silver and enamel maker Ovchinnikov in Moscow in 1880, has a beautifully embellished surface of bright enamel cloisons and exquisite filigree.

Around this time, traditional folk themes and rich, sumptuous designs were popular in Russian decorative arts. At this period, Ovchinnikov was one of the most influential producers of silver and enamel items, and his works were much sought after by collectors and aristocracy.

The tea glass holder was created for use in the ancient Russian tea ritual, which was both ceremonial and social. The holder was constructed of silver gilt and was intended to hold a tiny glass for sipping tea. The complex design of the holder, as well as its use of enamel and filigree, show the primacy of aesthetics in Russian tea culture.

The tea glass holder exemplifies the fine craftsmanship of the Ovchinnikov studio as well as Russia's booming decorative arts sector in the nineteenth century. It is still a highly valued collector's item and a treasured representation of Russia's rich cultural history.
