Hold a fine moonstone to the light and a soft blue glow drifts across it like moonlight on water. That effect — and the meanings of intuition, romance and renewal that follow the moon — has made this feldspar one of jewellery's most poetic stones.

Quick answer: what does moonstone mean?

Moonstone symbolises intuition, new beginnings and feminine energy — the moon's light caught in stone. Its floating blue glow (adularescence) has linked it to lunar goddesses, love and inner knowing since antiquity.

It is June's alternative birthstone and the signature stone of Art Nouveau jewellery.

Symbolism and history

Both Greeks and Romans believed moonstone was solidified moonlight, sacred to lunar deities; in India it remains holy, traditionally given to lovers. In Europe it was said to kindle passion and let lovers read their future together. The stone's glow — adularescence — is light scattering between microscopic feldspar layers, and the bluer and more mobile the sheen, the finer the stone; the classic source is Sri Lanka. Its artistic peak was Art Nouveau: René Lalique and his contemporaries set dreamy moonstones into flowing silver and gold, and Arts & Crafts jewellers in Britain matched them with hand-worked silver. Edwardians loved it beside diamonds and pearls.

What moonstone means

Intuition

Inner knowing — trusting the quiet voice over the loud one.

New beginnings

The waxing moon: fresh starts, growth, renewal.

Love

An ancient lovers' stone, said to kindle tenderness and passion.

Calm

The cool of moonlight — balance and emotional ease.

Cultural and traditional meaning

The moon's stone carries the moon's meanings: intuition over logic, the tides of feeling, cycles and new beginnings. A traveller's talisman ('safe passage by night'), a lovers' gift, and in modern tradition the stone of calm, fertility and feminine strength. June's alternative birthstone.

Moonstone in antique and fine jewellery

In antique jewellery, moonstone means Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts: cabochon moonstones glowing from hand-crafted silver and gold, often beside enamel — the movement's favourite dreamlike stone. Edwardian and Victorian pieces set it with seed pearls and diamonds; 1960s–70s jewellers revived it, which is where our current vintage 9ct example sits. How to identify and value it

Loose moonstone cabochons with blue and rainbow sheen

The finer the blue sheen and the clearer the body, the better: top 'blue-sheen' Sri Lankan moonstone is genuinely valuable, milky white material modest. Rainbow moonstone is technically labradorite — pretty, but different. Moonstone is soft (6–6.5), so antique stones often show wear; unworn survivors carry premiums, and Art Nouveau or signed settings far more. Cool water and a soft cloth only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Moonstone meaning and value, answered.

What does moonstone symbolise?

Intuition, new beginnings, love and feminine energy — lunar meanings attached to its floating blue glow since Greek and Roman times. It is June's alternative birthstone.

Is moonstone valuable?

Fine blue-sheen moonstone with a clear body is valuable, especially in Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts or signed settings. Milky material is affordable; the setting and era often carry most of the value.

What makes moonstone glow?

Adularescence — light scattering between microscopic layers within the feldspar, producing a soft sheen that moves as the stone turns. The bluer and more mobile, the finer the stone.

Is moonstone good for engagement rings?

It's romantic but soft (6–6.5 Mohs), so it needs a protective setting and gentle wear. Many couples choose it as a meaningful alternative stone — just treat it kindly.
